Family Law Basics

When it comes to issues with the family, there are a lot of sensitive matters that needs to be kept private. Especially when it comes to the kids. That is why any legal matters concerning the family should be handled by professional family lawyers.

Family law has a lot of scope under its bucket ranging from child custody disputes to divorce. Here are some of the major issues that family lawyers help settle.

Divorce

The first step in going for a divorce with your partner is separation. Your separation can either be through a court order or an informal separation. The term used for the separation is a legal separation.

There may be some states that do not require the couples to wait for a certain period of time to have their divorce approved. The waiting period requirement is actually a good procedure is it will give couples time to consider saving their marriage.

Child Support

Child support is one type of payment that is ordered by the court for a child's basic needs such as food, clothes, education and shelter. Child support is ordered when two parents are already living separately or already has married a different partner. Both parents of the child are required to pay for the support of the child not unless one of them has surrendered their  parental rights in court.

Marriage

The requirements for legal marriage are different for every state. However, your marriage will still be honored even if you got married in a state that has different marriage requirements from the one that you are currently living on. The majority of the states in the United States requires the both individuals to of legal age, which is 18 years old or older. However, there is an exemption if both individuals would have their parents' consent.
